Best Pool Skimmers: Leaf Nets and Solar Robots
Five pool skimmers compared: a ProTuff leaf rake net, an Intex above ground maintenance kit, and three Betta solar robotic skimmers, matched to pool type.
The best pool skimmer for your backyard depends on which job you need done. A pool’s built-in skimmer and basket pull floating debris toward the filter while the pump runs, but most owners still want a second tool on top of that: a handheld leaf net for the leaves that land after a storm, or a solar robotic skimmer that patrols the surface all day. This guide compares five picks in those groups, a ProTuff leaf rake net, an Intex maintenance kit for above ground pools, and three Betta solar robotic skimmers, using maker specifications, manuals, and the Amazon listings.
This guide is general product information, not repair or electrical safety advice. Follow the manufacturer’s manual for installation and use, have pool electrical work done by a licensed electrician, keep children supervised around water, and stop using any product that sparks, overheats, or has a damaged cord.

How We Chose
We do not run our own product trials. Our picks draw on maker specifications and manuals, the Amazon listings, and Amazon owner ratings. Owner ratings set the base of each product’s BackyardPoolLab Score, which is calculated with the method on our How We Review page. For this guide we started from the pool skimmers sold new on Amazon in the US, then kept only listings that met every rule below.
- A skimming tool, not a part. We kept handheld nets, kits built around a skimmer net, and robotic surface skimmers. Replacement baskets, lids, weirs, hoses, adapters, and skimmer socks were left out.
- Makers in this guide. The picks come from ProTuff, Betta, and Intex. Listings whose manufacturer field named a different company were dropped.
- Owner ratings above our floor. Every pick meets our minimum Amazon owner rating and a minimum number of ratings. We do not print the figures because Amazon data changes daily.
- New, current listings only. No renewed, used, or open-box listings. Where the same Betta model was listed both alone and bundled with a storage bag, we kept one listing.
- No more than three picks from one brand, so one maker cannot fill the list.
- Current on the maker’s site. We opened each maker’s product page; none of the five is marked discontinued there.
The order below is our editorial judgment, not a sort by score. The ProTuff net is our Best Overall for three reasons. It needs no charging, hoses, or pump connection, and ProTuff’s product page does not limit it to one pool type. That page spells out its specifications: 690-micron mesh, an aluminum-frame head, and a net, rim, and handle that swap in about 2 minutes. And the same page lists the 19.5-inch leaf rake as a current size with a written replacement policy for homeowners. It was sold by a storefront named ProTuff Products when we checked. The three Betta robots follow, starting with the SE Plus, which pairs solar and adapter charging with a handheld remote; the Flex and Neo come next as more specialized choices, one for infinity pools and sunny yards, one for app control. The Intex kit sits last because it fits a narrower group: Intex above ground pools 18 feet across or larger that run an Intex filter pump of at least 800 gallons per hour.
The Pool Skimmers We Recommend
The five picks fall into three groups: pick 1 is a handheld net, picks 2 to 4 are robotic pool skimmers that run on solar power, and pick 5 is a maintenance kit built around a skimmer net for Intex pools.
1. ProTuff 490 Promise Pro Pool Leaf Rake Net, 19.5 in
Who it suits: owners of any pool, inground or above ground, who clear leaves by hand, for example after a windy night under oaks or maples. ProTuff’s product page describes it as a deep-pocket leaf rake “that skims the surface and digs the bottom with the same tool.”
What stands out: ProTuff’s page lists 690-micron “Goldilox” medium mesh that “grabs anything bigger than sand and silt,” an aluminum-frame head, and an EZ-Replace design in which the net, rim, and handle swap in about 2 minutes. According to the Amazon listing, the head is nylon on an aluminum handle that attaches to a pole, and every part can be replaced on site. The page offers the rake in 19.5-inch and 23.5-inch sizes; the Amazon listing is the 19.5-inch model, part number PT-TC-19.
- Pro: deep net for leaf loads, per ProTuff, so you stop to empty it less often.
- Pro: replaceable net, rim, and handle, per ProTuff’s page and the listing.
- Pro: works in any pool you can reach from the deck, with no charging or plumbing.
- Con: the 690-micron mesh is medium, not fine; ProTuff’s page suggests pairing it with its silt net for fine debris.
- Con: manual work every time, so it does nothing while you are away.
- Con: the listing’s specifications describe a pole attachment and do not list a telescoping pole, so plan on the pole you already own or buy one.
Warranty note: ProTuff’s product page describes “The 490 Promise: free replacements for registered homeowners, 50% off for pros” and calls that coverage “for life.” ProTuff’s warranty page says its pro-grade tool series carries a lifetime warranty and its value tools a 2-year warranty, and that pool owners need an original order ID for a replacement. Neither page says which group this rake belongs to, so confirm the term with ProTuff before you rely on lifetime coverage, and keep your Amazon order details.
Choose a different pick if: you want surface debris collected while you are at work, or you mainly fight fine pollen and silt rather than leaves.
2. Betta SE Plus Solar Robotic Pool Skimmer
Who it suits: owners of an inground or above ground pool with steps or a shallow sun shelf who want a robot that keeps running through cloudy stretches. Betta’s FAQ page lists a 3.5-inch minimum water depth for the SE Plus, compared with 6 inches for the Flex; it gives no figure for the Neo.
What stands out: Betta’s SE Plus product page lists “30+ hours of continuous cleaning on a single charge, even on rainy or cloudy days,” a recharge of 5 to 6 hours in direct sunlight or 3.5 hours with the adapter, a 200 um fine-mesh debris basket, ultrasonic radar to detect obstacles, a wireless remote, and coverage for pools up to 40 by 60 feet. According to the Amazon listing, it uses twin Salt Chlorine Tolerant (SCT) motors, measures 22 by 18.5 by 8 inches, and weighs 6.8 kg (about 15 lb). The listing also notes that it cleans the surface only and does not clean the pool bottom.
- Pro: solar charging with an adapter backup, per Betta.
- Pro: handheld remote to steer it, per Betta’s product page and manual.
- Pro: 3.5-inch minimum depth, per Betta’s FAQ, which helps on steps and shallow ledges.
- Con: Betta’s product page lists it for above-ground and in-ground pools only; the listing for its storage-bag bundle says it is not suitable for infinity pools.
- Con: the SE Plus manual says not to use it while other pool cleaning devices are in the pool.
- Con: no soft casing, per Betta’s comparison table; the Flex and Neo have one.
Charging note: the SE Plus manual says the unit takes a solar charge only when the power switch is ON, and must be turned OFF when you charge it with the power adapter. Follow the manual for the adapter steps.
Choose a different pick if: you have an infinity-edge pool, you run a robotic or suction cleaner at the same time, or you would rather schedule cleaning from your phone.
3. Betta Flex Solar Pool Skimmer Robot
Who it suits: owners of a sunny pool, including an infinity-edge pool, who want a robot with no charger to manage. Betta’s Flex product page lists infinity, above-ground, and in-ground pools, and the Flex manual says “Betta Flex is compatible with the Infinity Pool.”
What stands out: Betta’s page describes the Flex as “completely solar-powered and 100% cordless,” with an Eco Mode for “smart, periodic sweeps” and a Normal Mode for continuous 24/7 running. The manual says that in Eco Mode the unit pauses after every 4 hours of operation, and that an anti-tangle mechanism keeps the cord of an underwater robotic cleaner from being pulled into the basket when both run at once. According to the Amazon listing, it charges in 5 to 6 hours of direct sunlight, has a soft-touch casing and a top-handle basket, measures 19.5 by 16 by 8.5 inches, and weighs 8.3 pounds.
- Pro: listed for infinity pools by Betta, unlike the other two robots here.
- Pro: no adapter or plug to manage, per Betta.
- Pro: anti-tangle mechanism for use alongside a corded robotic cleaner, per the manual.
- Con: solar only, so the manual warns of shorter runtime in fall and winter when the sun is low.
- Con: 6-inch minimum water depth, per Betta’s FAQ, deeper than the 3.5 inches Betta lists for the SE Plus.
- Con: the manual says it has no LED to signal a full basket; you check through the window in the solar panel.
Choose a different pick if: your pool sits in shade for much of the day, or it has shallow steps or a ledge under 6 inches deep.
4. Betta Neo Solar Pool Skimmer Robot
Who it suits: owners who want to schedule and watch the skimmer from a phone, for example on a large yard where the pool is out of sight of the house. Betta’s Neo product page says the included Betta Gateway gives “an extended connection range of up to 600 feet.”
What stands out: Betta’s page lists three cleaning modes, Auto, Smart Weather-Adaptive, and Scheduled, and says the unit “intelligently adapts its cleaning based on upcoming weather or follows your customized schedule.” It charges by solar or adapter, per Betta. According to the Amazon listing, it works with 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi networks, uses twin SCT motors and ultrasonic radar, has a soft-touch, UV-resistant casing, measures 19.5 by 17 by 8 inches, and weighs 9 pounds.
- Pro: the only Betta model with app control, per Betta’s comparison table.
- Pro: weather-adaptive and scheduled modes, per Betta.
- Pro: solar charging with an adapter backup, per Betta.
- Con: the app features depend on the gateway and your Wi-Fi; the listing advises restarting the unit, gateway, and app if they lose connection.
- Con: Betta’s FAQ does not list a minimum water depth for the Neo.
- Con: the listing says to keep both propellers clear of leaves and hair for reliable navigation.
Charging note: the Neo manual says the unit must be turned OFF when you charge it with the power adapter. Follow the manual for the adapter steps.
Choose a different pick if: your Wi-Fi does not reach the pool area well, or you would rather not set up an app at all.
5. INTEX Deluxe Above Ground Pool Maintenance Kit
Who it suits: owners of a larger Intex above ground pool who want a skimmer net, a vacuum, and a wall brush in one box, for example on an 18-foot round frame pool. Intex’s 28003E product page says the kit’s 110-inch telescoping aluminum shaft is “for use with 18ft diameter pools and above.”
What stands out: Intex’s page lists a vacuum head, a “durable and deep mesh skimmer net,” and a wall brush attachment, plus a 24 ft 7 in hose that attaches to the outlet connector in the pool. According to the Amazon listing, the kit also includes a scrubber vacuum and a leaf rake with debris net, and the vacuum runs through the filter pump.
- Pro: skimmer net, vacuum, wall brush, and pole in one kit, per Intex.
- Pro: 110-inch telescoping pole sized for pools 18 feet across and larger, per Intex.
- Pro: the vacuum “sucks debris off the pool floor and through the filter,” per Intex, so one kit covers surface and floor.
- Con: the vacuum “requires an Intex filter pump with a minimum flow rate of 800 gph,” per Intex, so smaller pumps will not run it.
- Con: the listing gives the pole as 100 inches in one field and 110 inches in another; Intex’s page says 110 inches.
- Con: Intex’s page shows no warranty term, and the listing’s warranty fields disagree with each other.
Choose a different pick if: your pool is smaller than 18 feet across, your filter pump is under 800 gallons per hour, or you only need a net.
How to Choose the Best Pool Skimmer
Start from your pool’s own skimmer. On most inground pools and many above ground pools, the built-in or wall-mount skimmer and its basket do the daily surface work whenever the pump runs, so the tools here are a second line. Knowing what a pool skimmer is, and what it cannot reach, helps you pick the right add-on. Worn skimmer baskets and wall-mount above ground pool skimmers are separate purchases and are not part of this list. Then pick by the debris you see most and how much time you want to spend on it.
Net, kit, or robot
Handheld skimmer nets need no power and work in any pool you can reach from the deck, which makes them the quickest way to clear a sudden load of leaves. A kit makes sense when you also need a vacuum and brush for an above ground pool. A robotic skimmer suits owners who want floating debris collected every day without lifting a pole. Betta sells all three robots here as surface skimmers, and the SE Plus listing says it does not clean the pool bottom, so sunken debris still needs a vacuum or a pool cleaner.
Debris type and basket size
Robot baskets need regular emptying. The SE Plus manual says to empty its basket every 2 to 3 days, and the Flex manual says every 3 to 4 days, sometimes as often as every 1 to 2. On a pool under large trees in autumn, keep a deep-bag net such as the ProTuff for the heaviest days. For fine pollen, mesh size matters: Betta lists a 200 um basket on the SE Plus, and ProTuff describes its 690-micron mesh as medium.
Sun exposure and charging
All three Betta robots charge from their solar panels. The Betta manuals say solar charging efficiency is significantly lower in fall and winter, so expect shorter runtime. The SE Plus and Neo add an adapter for cloudy stretches, while the Flex is solar only. If your pool is shaded for much of the day, a model with adapter charging is the safer choice.
Pool shape, depth, and other cleaners
Check the minimum depth against your steps and ledges: Betta’s FAQ page lists 3.5 inches for the SE Plus and 6 inches for the Flex. Only the Flex is listed for infinity pools. If you run a corded robotic cleaner or a suction cleaner with a hose, note that the SE Plus manual says not to use it with other cleaning devices in the pool, while the Flex and Neo manuals describe an anti-tangle mechanism and suggest hose weights to keep cleaner hoses off the surface.
Saltwater pools
The Betta manuals say the robots are designed for fresh water or salt water up to 5,000 parts per million, and that using them in seawater pools voids the warranty.
Where you buy it and warranty
At the time of writing, the ProTuff net was sold by ProTuff Products, the three Betta robots by a storefront named BettaOfficial, and the Intex kit by Spreetail, a third-party seller. Read the “Sold by” line before you order. Betta’s warranty page gives every Betta a 1-year standard warranty, sells its Betta Care extended plan only within 30 days of purchase and only in the United States and Canada, and says Betta does not accept Amazon extended warranty claims. ProTuff’s warranty page asks owners for the original order ID.

Who Should Look Elsewhere
Skip these picks if your problem is the pool’s own skimmer: a cracked basket, a stuck weir, or a skimmer that will not pull water is a parts or service job, not a reason to buy a net or robot. Skip the robots if dirt settles on the floor more than it floats; Betta sells them as surface skimmers, and the SE Plus listing says it does not clean the pool bottom. A robotic pool cleaner is the tool for floors and walls.
If the pool is in use for much of the day, note that every Betta manual says to take the robot out of the pool and keep it in a cool, shaded place while the pool is in use. Every Betta manual also says not to swim while the unit is working and to keep it away from children because it is not a toy.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best type of pool skimmer?
It depends on the debris and your time. A deep-bag leaf net handles heavy leaf fall fastest and needs no power. A solar robotic skimmer collects floating debris every day on its own but has a small basket you empty every few days. Most pools still rely on the built-in or wall-mount skimmer for daily surface cleaning, so these tools add to it rather than replace it.
Do solar pool skimmers work on cloudy days?
Betta’s SE Plus page says one full charge gives 30-plus hours of cleaning, even on rainy or cloudy days. Over longer gray spells, or in fall and winter when the manuals say solar charging drops, a model with adapter charging such as the SE Plus or Neo keeps running more reliably than the solar-only Flex.
Can a robotic skimmer replace a robotic pool cleaner?
No. The SE Plus listing says the unit “is designed for surface cleaning only and does not clean the pool bottom.” Betta’s FAQ page explains that robotic pool cleaners work on the floor and walls. Betta’s Neo product page describes the skimmer as “designed to capture debris before it sinks.”
Can I swim while a robotic skimmer is running?
No. The SE Plus manual says “DO NOT SWIM while Betta is working in the pool” and to take it out and keep it in a cool, shaded place while the pool is in use. The Flex and Neo manuals give the same instruction.
Can I use a robotic skimmer in a saltwater pool?
Yes, within limits. The Betta manuals say the robots work in fresh water or salt water up to 5,000 parts per million, and that seawater pools void the warranty.
What should I do with a robotic skimmer in winter?
The Betta manuals say to remove the unit when you close the pool, rinse it with a hose, let it dry completely, and store it indoors at room temperature in a dry place away from high heat. They also say not to clean it with a pressure washer.
